Mental Health Resources for Veterans in Houston: Where to Get Help

The transition from military to civilian life is one of the most significant changes a person can face. For many veterans, that transition comes with invisible wounds — PTSD, depression, anxiety, and substance use challenges that don't show up on a discharge form but shape every day of life afterward.

Asking for help is not weakness. It's strategy. And in Houston, there are more options than most veterans realize.

The VA's Mental Health Services

The Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston offers a full range of mental health services for enrolled veterans, including:

  • Individual and group therapy
  • PTSD treatment programs (including Cognitive Processing Therapy and Prolonged Exposure)
  • Substance use disorder treatment
  • Inpatient psychiatric care
  • Medication management

To access VA mental health care:

  1. Enroll in VA healthcare at va.gov/health-care/apply or call (877) 222-8387
  2. Request a mental health appointment — you can self-refer without a primary care referral
  3. Same-day mental health services are available at the Houston VA for urgent needs

Vet Centers: Community-Based Counseling

Vet Centers are community-based counseling centers run by the VA — but they feel very different from a hospital setting. They're smaller, more accessible, and specifically designed for combat veterans and military sexual trauma survivors.

Houston has two Vet Center locations:

Houston Vet Center 2990 Richmond Ave, Suite 325, Houston, TX 77098 (713) 523-0884

Houston West Vet Center 14300 Cornerstone Village Dr, Suite 110, Houston, TX 77014 (281) 537-6801

Vet Centers offer individual and group counseling, bereavement support, and referrals — often with shorter wait times than the main VA. Family members of veterans are also eligible for many services.

Crisis Support: When You Need Help Now

If you or a veteran you know is in crisis, these resources are available 24/7:

Veterans Crisis Line Call 988, then press 1 Text 838255 Chat at veteranscrisisline.net

Staffed by responders who are themselves veterans or have extensive experience with military culture. Confidential, free, and available around the clock.

Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD Houston's local mental health authority operates a 24-hour crisis line at (713) 970-7000 and mobile crisis outreach teams that can come to you.

Community Programs in Houston

Beyond the VA, several community organizations provide veteran-specific mental health support:

Give an Hour A national network of licensed mental health professionals who provide free counseling to veterans and military families. Find a provider at giveanhour.org.

The Mission Continues Platoon-based volunteer programs that connect veterans with community service — a proven approach to combating isolation and building purpose after service. missioncontinues.org

Lone Star Veterans Association Houston-based peer support network with regular events, mentorship, and connections to mental health resources. lonestarvet.org

Housing Instability and Mental Health

At PPC Housing Program, we see every day how closely housing stability and mental health are connected. Chronic stress from housing insecurity makes it harder to engage in treatment. And untreated mental health challenges can make it harder to maintain housing.

That's why our case managers work alongside mental health providers — not separately from them. When you come to us for housing assistance, we make sure you're connected to the full range of support you need.

If you're struggling with both housing and mental health challenges, you don't have to solve one before addressing the other. We can help you work on both at the same time.

Reach out to our team today — we're available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
